Be self-employed, Employed, or form a company

Be self-employed, Employed, or run a company the choice is yours - we will help you!

A phone indicating that PAs can access information remotely at any time

It is entirely your choice whether you wish to be self-employed or if you prefer to be employed by your 'client', or by an agency, or employed by your own company. We support our members however they wish to run their work life. However, PAs need to be aware that in some Local Authority areas Direct Payment recipients are required to engage a company rather than a self-employed PA. Either way we are here to support you.

Help to register with HMRC

A woman is completing filling in a form

Registering with HMRC as a self-employed person, or as a company director or as an employed person is straight forward but we are here to help you if you have questions. Most of the process will happen automatically if you are employed or become a company director. We can assist you if you need help to register for self-employed.

Insurance

A PA indicates they are insured by ticking a box

If you are self-employed, you will need public liability insurance, if you run your own company you will need slightly different insurance as it will include employers liability, even though you are employing yourself. If you are employed by the person you care for or by an agency then the insurance will be the responsibility of the employer.

Be employed by the person you care for

People who receive Direct Payments from their Local Authority or who are self-funding care at home may decide to become an 'employer'. They will therefore register with HMRC as an employer, pay you a wage with wage slips and will be responsible for holiday and sick pay as well as needing to pay employers liability insurance.
